The
relaxing environment and incomparable beauty of Capri have always
been the two key factors in the islands great success as a holiday
venue. Its not surprising that Capri was the favourite holiday
destination of Emperor Augustus, who, in an agreement with the then
Greek city of Neapolis, asked for the isle of Capri, conceding in
return the larger and more fertile island of Ischia.
For eleven years his successor Tiberius reigned over the vast Roman
Empire from his home on Capri, where he also built his twelve legendary
villas in the most exclusive and panoramic areas of the island. One
of these villas is situated in the splendid locality of Damecuta:
sea, rocks and lush vegetation; on one side a view of the Gulf of
Naples, visible as far as the peninsula of Sorrento, and on the other
the endless blue of the sea.
In the vicinity of the Emperors villa, close to the road leading
to the Grotta Azzura, stands the Mulino, which,
before being converted, was an old farm-house and oil-press.
How to get there
A ten minute walk from the centre of Anacapri along the road for
Damecuta, through the narrow little streets with their characteristic
white houses with vaulted roofs.
By bus or taxi along the Grotta Azzurra provincial road.
By special minibus, upon request.
